Joining the ISA Project (International School Award) during the last two years, Hanoi Academy Secondary School constantly deploys international activities which attracted the active participation of teachers and students. In 2015-2016 school year with the program “Tet around the world”, students in the school had the opportunity to explore many regions of many countries around the world to learn about their New Year customs with traditional foods, costumes and festivals… The sport hall was full of brilliant colors with Hanbok, Dirndl (traditional dress of women in Southern Germany), Tricana poveira (traditional dress of women in Povoa de Varzim City, Portutal), Flamenco (Spain), Muumuu (traditional dress of women in Hawaii)… and aroma of the dishes from many countries. Meanwhile, the project “Robinson on island” was so impressive with the handling situations contest: being lost, forgotten or lost passport while going abroad, being teased… together with the camping contest, open grapefruit by hand… to simulate the human ability to be able to survive alone. Not only took place in the school-scale, the project of the natural sciences, social sciences and foreign languages were deployed to each class, each block matching with capability, physiology, characteristics and ages of students.
Most recently, in the project “Food – where does it come from?”, 8th grade students already had an interesting experience to learn about the cuisine of several countries. With the advantage of a foreign language, their products was impressive; not only posters, PowerPoint presentations, but also as part of fluent English speakers. “Food – where does it come from?” was a project that provided opportunities for the Hanoi Academy students to learn about Vietnamese agriculture as well as the traditional agriculture products in our country. Known as a leading agricultural country in the world, Hanoi Academy students have established relationships with India students through Facebook, Zalo, email etc… From there, the students of the Hanoi Academy have had the opportunity to answer the questions from India friends. This rewarding activity was not only strengthening the international friendship but also helped the students improve the ability to communicate in English, to broaden understanding of agricultural production in Vietnam as well as in the world.
Minh Anh (8A2) shared about the project: “We’ve done in group of 3 peoples and we can present and research in different forms. There are some groups who use Power Point or write essay, but we selected to design A1 poster. We selected agricultural topic about coffee tree. Although our country had a lot of specific agricultural products such as rice, sugarcane, corn, tea etc… but our group decided to select coffee because Vietnam is the second largest producer in the world.
Although we have only three peoples in our group but I think our group has completed this project very well. First, this is an open topic so we can be select what we feel most excited to research. Second, an indispensable element of each group exercise is the cooperation. Each individual must actively participate in group activities, sharing personal opinions and agree together to find a way. And I think our group has done that.
Through this exercise, I’ve practiced a lot of essential skills in life. First is the ability to search, select and present. Also, I have a better understanding of Vietnam’s agriculture, especially in coffee (cultivation, processing, Coffee brands in Vietnam…). And the most important thing is to promote the skills to do all groups and communicate with foreign friends.
In my opinion, this is a rewarding project. We have learned a new thing, but also promoted the ability to speak and write in English. Hanoi Academy is always looking to refresh their teaching methods; the teachers always have homework and projects such as presentations, drawings, contests, filming etc … instead of just learning theory or doing the exercises in text books. Such learning helps students feel more enjoyable but also more effective. ”
Along with the constant innovation of teaching methods, Hanoi Academy Secondary School always explores innovative and unique programs to give students the best education. With solid language foundation, the projects in ISA have gradually gained the pleasure of the students as well as it has been brought the practical senses. The new project “Tropical fruits” is waiting for you, let’s experience together!
